Season 2 Ep 3 – Re-voice your melody

Let’s talk about chords…
We wrote a simple melody and lyric to use with examples of how you can easily expand the harmonic possibilities just by changing the chord sequence.

Example 1 uses the melody accompanied with just an Am chord.
Example 2 uses 2 chords Am and D9.
Example 3 starts the same melody on a different chord entirely with Fmaj7 to Dm7 to B Half dim to E#9,.
Example 4 is a more complex variation starting Am, F# half dim, Em7, Ebmaj7. Then we go Am, F# half dim, Fm7 Em7, Ebmaj7.
Example 5 Near the end of the epsiode we also try another variation of Am to C.

One of the most common things now is to use loops when you are writing a song. This can certainly be a great thing. It helps you build a groove and can give form and rhythm to your ideas. This however can be as limiting as it is inspiring as you can find yourself quickly ‘writing to the loop’ instead of generating your ideas freely.

The Explore Your Voice Show

The first season of The Explore Your Voice Show aired in 2005. Hosted by music luminaries Kate Slaney, Michael Oliphant and Roger McLachlan, the 38 episodes were mostly about learning to sing, recording and performing.That first season has become so popular that it's now been downloaded over a quarter of a million times.
Now we are excited to launch Season 2 in March 2011 - a much expanded edition of the Explore Your Voice Show including interviews with bands, writers and industry experts as well as lots of musical examples to learn from.
