Let’s talk about chords…
We wrote a simple melody and lyric to use with examples of how you can easily expand the harmonic possibilities just by changing the chord sequence.
Example 1 uses the melody accompanied with just an Am chord.
Example 2 uses 2 chords Am and D9.
Example 3 starts the same melody on a different chord entirely with Fmaj7 to Dm7 to B Half dim to E#9,.
Example 4 is a more complex variation starting Am, F# half dim, Em7, Ebmaj7. Then we go Am, F# half dim, Fm7 Em7, Ebmaj7.
Example 5 Near the end of the epsiode we also try another variation of Am to C.
One of the most common things now is to use loops when you are writing a song. This can certainly be a great thing. It helps you build a groove and can give form and rhythm to your ideas. This however can be as limiting as it is inspiring as you can find yourself quickly ‘writing to the loop’ instead of generating your ideas freely.
Yes, we are finally back – and loving it!. With Michael Oliphant, Roger McLachlan and Kate Slaney back at the microphone this is the first instalment of our hugely popular show not only for singers, but all types of musicians performing, recording and songwriting.
In this comeback episode we talk about what we’ve been up to the last couple of years, the albums we’ve been recording, the tours and other interesting stuff. Michael talks about how the new Late For Breakfast album ‘The Art Of Falling’was recorded and we include a free bonus track from that album ‘You Live You Love You Die’ to download.
